Wolf Creek Bike Trail - New Trail Ramp
CONDITIONS and ROUTE
All snow melted, some patches of ice. Overcast, windy. 18f.
Walk lasted one hour. Headed north on shannon, scrambled down levee to Wolf Creek and followed trail to Great Miami River. Went north to Sunrise Park. Sat at the park for a few minutes to read. Turned around and headed south just far enough to see construction of new bike ramp between I-75 and West Third Street:
This will allow us to access the trail system quicker, as well as offer a put-in to the river for kayakers.
Double back and walked along top of levee heading back west to Shannon. Noticed desire path from the Edwin C. Moses Bridge along levee.
INTERACTIONS
I only came across one man riding a bicycle along West Third Street. He vigorously avoided eye contact and did not return my greeting.
OBSERVATIONS
Underside of Wolf Creek bridge has been painted since the summer, covering up graffiti. One long vacant house in the Wolf Creek neighborhood along Shannon has been demolished in past month or so. A clean up crew was gutting a house that was damaged by a fire that burned down adjacent vacant house. Vacant house fires are somewhat common.
I remember noticing this feature at the confluence of Wolf Creek and the Great Miami River previously:
I have since learned that it was a innovation that came out of the flood control actions during the early 1900s. The idea behind it was to lay a "blanket" of cement blocks, reinforced by flexible steel cables. This provided structural support to a bank or levee, while still allowing dynamic ground movement that would come with seasonal changes and minor erosions.
REFLECTIONS
Here are some strange people running in the cold when they could be walking in the cold.
